Created by Respawn and Electronic Arts, Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale first-person shooter. Teams compete to be the last team standing after all dropping into an island. The game is playable on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It is not cross-platform compatible at this time. Apex Legends is free to play and is supported by microtransactions for cosmetic items. There is no advantage in the game to be gained by spending money other than unlocking the last two of the eight Legends.

The main difference in Apex compared to the other popular BR games is the Legends system. Players choose from eight  predefined characters with unique abilities that are split into four classes: Offense, Defense, Support, and Tracker.

Players still collect guns, ammo, and power ups throughout the game similar to other BRs. There are no levels that make characters or accounts stronger from game to game.

In Apex the game is entirely team based. There is no option to play as a one man squad. If players aren’t queing with friends or teammates they will be placed with other teammates. Players are in teams of 3 and there are 20 teams for each given game. Like other BRs, the last team left wins.

Competitive Scene:

The professional scene for Apex Legends is currently just made up of popular streamers. There are no well-established Apex leagues or teams since the scene is brand new. With how popular the game has become in such a short amount of time it is probable a professional and collegiate scene will develop within the coming months. AVGL or American Video Game League is already hosting a collegiate Apex tournament on March 2nd- https://avglcollege.org/event/avgl-apex/news/510?tg=895.
